The film, based on Olive Higgans Prouty's novel, was originally planned for Irene Dunne but Davis set out to change producer Hal B. Wallis' mind. She got the role-and one of her 10 lifetime Academy Award Nominations as Best Actress. Davis plays Charlotte Vale, a repressed spinster who defies her mother to discover love, heartbreak and eventual contentment. Her transformation from ugly duckling (the result of heavily-padded dress, Perc Westmore's makeup and the actress' unsurpassed skill) to elegant swan is pure movie magic. More magic is supplied by an outstanding supporting cast, Max Steiner's Academy-winning score and an improvised moment by Paul Henreid that became an instant filmlore classic: he lights two cigarettes at once and hands one to Davis. Romantic film fans everywhere have ever since copied the gesture.
